Horace Vandergelder, a merchant of Yonkers, is so rich that he decides to take a wife. He employs a matchmaker, Dolly Levi, who subsequently becomes involved with two of his menial clerks, Cornelius and Barnaby, two young and lovely ladies, Irene Malloy and Minnie Faye, Horace’s niece and her fianc
é, Ermengarde and Ambrose, and the headwaiter at an expensive restaurant where this swift farce runs headlong into hilarious complications. After everyone gets straightened out romantically and has his/her heart's desire, Horace finds himself engaged to the astute matchmaker herself. He who was so shrewd in business is putty in the hands of Dolly Levi. He is fooled by his apprentices in a series of hilarious hide and seek scenes, and finally has all his bluster explode in his face.WARNING: Do not see the movie! YET. Although the performers are all good, the direction is terrible. The pace is slow and some characters in the play are cut. If you see the movie, it might spoil your taste for the play which is SOOO much better.
