NOISES OFF has been called “the funniest farce ever written.” NOISES OFF will be directed by Jake Beckhard, a young visiting artist who has directed or assistant-directed numerous productions in New York and Washington, D.C.

Synopsis: In a provincial English town, a theatre troupe rehearses a touring production of a bawdy comedy, “Nothing On.” Unfortunately, almost nothing is going right – the cast can’t remember their lines, they mix up their blocking and misplace props, and they’ve lost sight of why they’re acting!  Even the director is certain that the show will be a disaster. Somehow the cast pulls through, but by mid-tour the drama has moved backstage, as cast and crews’ personal lives start to mirror the insanity in the play, with romantic dalliances, jealousies, and chaos reigning overall. By closing night, the play is in complete shambles both onstage and off, with cast members engaged in open warfare while simply trying to survive until the final curtain.

Character Descriptions:  Six of the nine characters in NOISES OFF are also actors in the play-within-the-play, “Nothing On,” which takes place in a vacant country home owned by Philip and Flavia Brent.

Lloyd Dallas: The director of the play-within-the-play, Nothing On. Temperamental, exacting and sarcastic. Romantically involved with both Brooke and Poppy.

Dotty Otley: An experienced television star who is not only the top-billed star of Nothing On, but also one of the play’s principal investors. Dating Garry Lejeune. In Nothing On, Dotty plays Mrs. Clackett, a slow-witted but amiable housekeeper.

Garry Lejeune: A solid actor who in real life is incapable of finishing a sentence unless it is scripted dialogue. Dating Dotty and prone to jealousy. In Nothing On, Garry plays a rental agent, Roger Tramplemain, who wants to use the Brents’ house for a romantic liaison with Vicki.

Brooke Ashton: A younger, inexperienced actress who pays no attention to others, either in performance or backstage, and persists in her role as scripted regardless of any interruption or mayhem. Involved romantically with Lloyd. In Nothing On, Brooke plays Vicki, a woman Roger is attempting to seduce.

Freddie Fellowes: A well-meaning actor who lacks confidence and is rather dim-witted.  In Nothing On, Freddie plays Philip Brent, who owns the house with his wife Flavia, but lives outside the country in order to avoid paying taxes.

Belinda Blair: Cheerful and sensible, a reliable actress and the company’s de facto peacemaker.  In Nothing On, Belinda plays Flavia Brent, Philip’s wife.

Selsdon Mowbray: An elderly, half-deaf actor with a long, storied career and a drinking problem.  In Nothing On, Selsdon plays a burglar breaking into the Brents’ home.

Poppy Norton-Taylor: Assistant Stage Manager and understudy to the female roles. Emotional, skittish and over-sensitive.  Romantically involved with Lloyd.

Tim Allgood: The over-worked and easily flustered Stage Manager, who must understudy, fix the set and run Lloyd’s errands on top of his usual duties.
